The Basics of Backgammon Game Plans – Part Two

by Erin on Sunday, December 31st, 2023

As we dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a game of ability and good luck. The aim is to shift your checkers safely around the game board to your home board and at the same time your opposition shifts their chips toward their inside board in the opposing direction. With opposing player checkers moving in opposing directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for particular techniques at specific times. Here are the two final Backgammon tactics to round out your game.

The Priming Game Strategy

If the purpose of the blocking plan is to hamper the opponents ability to shift her pieces, the Priming Game tactic is to absolutely barricade any activity of the opponent by creating a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s chips will either get hit, or result a battered position if he ever tries to escape the wall. The trap of the prime can be established anyplace between point two and point 11 in your board. Once you’ve successfully constructed the prime to block the activity of your competitor, the opponent doesn’t even get a chance to toss the dice, that means you shift your pieces and toss the dice yet again. You will win the game for sure.

The Back Game Tactic

The aims of the Back Game technique and the Blocking Game strategy are very similar – to harm your competitor’s positions in hope to improve your chances of succeeding, however the Back Game plan relies on different tactics to achieve that. The Back Game technique is generally utilized when you’re far behind your opponent. To participate in Backgammon with this technique, you have to hold 2 or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This tactic is more difficult than others to play in Backgammon seeing as it needs careful movement of your checkers and how the pieces are relocated is partly the result of the dice toss.

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of ability and pure luck. The goal is to move your chips carefully around the board to your home board and at the same time your opponent shifts their pieces toward their inner board in the opposite direction. With opposing player chips shifting in opposing directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for specific techniques at specific times. Here are the two final Backgammon tactics to complete your game.

The Priming Game Plan

If the aim of the blocking plan is to slow down the opponent to move his pieces, the Priming Game tactic is to absolutely block any activity of the opponent by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s checkers will either get hit, or end up in a bad position if he/she at all attempts to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be established anywhere between point two and point 11 in your half of the board. Once you’ve successfully assembled the prime to stop the activity of your opponent, the competitor doesn’t even get a chance to toss the dice, that means you shift your pieces and roll the dice again. You will be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Strategy

The objectives of the Back Game tactic and the Blocking Game plan are similar – to hurt your opponent’s positions with hope to improve your chances of succeeding, but the Back Game plan relies on different techniques to achieve that. The Back Game strategy is often employed when you are far behind your opponent. To compete in Backgammon with this tactic, you have to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This strategy is more complex than others to play in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the pieces are relocated is partly the result of the dice toss.

Backgammon – Three General Plans

by Erin on Monday, December 11th, 2023

In astonishingly simple terms, there are three basic tactics employed. You want to be able to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
