The Essential Details of Backgammon Tactics – Part 1

by Erin on April 6th, 2026

The goal of a Backgammon game is to move your checkers around the game board and pull those pieces off the game board faster than your competitor who works harder to attempt the same buthowever they move in the opposite direction. Winning a game in Backgammon needsrequires both tactics and fortune. How far you will be able to move your pieces is up to the numbers from rolling the dice, and just how you shift your checkers are decided on by your overall gambling plans. Players use a number of strategies in the differing parts of a match dependent on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Strategy

The goal of the Running Game technique is to lure all your checkers into your home board and get them off as quickly as you could. This plan focuses on the speed of moving your pieces with little or no efforts to hit or barricade your competitor’s checkers. The best scenario to use this strategy is when you believe you can move your own checkers quicker than the opponent does: when 1) you have less pieces on the game board; 2) all your chips have moved beyond your opponent’s pieces; or 3) the opposing player does not use the hitting or blocking tactic.

The Blocking Game Plan

The main aim of the blocking plan, by its title, is to stop your opponent’s checkers, temporarily, not worrying about moving your pieces quickly. Once you’ve created the blockade for the competitor’s movement with a couple of chips, you can move your other chips quickly from the game board. You will need to also have an apparent plan when to withdraw and move the chips that you employed for the blockade. The game becomes intriguing when your opposition uses the same blocking strategy.
